An object that is millions of eons away, 500 million light-years to be exact has been astonishing scientists as it has been transmitting signals that are hitting our earth every 16 days in a routine pattern.
Scientists are baffled and scratching their heads. They do not know what is causing this to occur. It is however a new discovery as an FRB. Fast Radio Burst. Coming from Deep Space.
A FRB (Fast Radio Burst) is defined in radio astronomy, a fast radio burst is a transient radio pulse of length ranging from a fraction of a millisecond to a few milliseconds, caused by some high-energy astrophysical process not yet understood. (source: Wikipedia)
Scientists are unaware of what is causing this pattern to occur.
The newly discovered radio bursts repeat their activity every 16 days — which suggests that something is controlling them in this routine manner. The consistency of 16 days is ongoing.
So far researchers have found over 100 types of fast radio bursts in our solar system, but out of those 100 only 10 have been seen to repeat over and over. Out of those 10 none have shown any consistent pattern, until now.
Astrophysicists discovered the pattern in data from the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment, or CHIME, radio telescope in British Columbia.
In this scenario they’re seeing approximately one to two radio bursts blast out per hour for four days before it goes silent for 12 days. The cycle repeats itself.
These bursts are tracked to a spiral galaxy that is nearly 500 million light-years away from Earth.
Duncan Lorimer, an astrophysicist at West Virginia University in Morgantown, told Science News: “This is very significant.
“It’s potentially going to take us in an interesting direction to get to the bottom of these repeaters.”
Researchers have also suggested that this particular fast radio burst could be orbiting something else, such as a star or a black hole. But what could this signal be communicating?
Some say that winds could be another cause of this, boosting or blocking radio pulses in this manner. The wind would have to be quite consistent and patternized as well though.
Scientists do not know what causes the signals, they are already ruling some things out.
Leon Oostrum at the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy told New Scientist: “If it were an alien beacon, I would think it would emit more quickly because a 16-day period is not efficient for communication. “Imagine getting one signal every 16 days — it would take forever to get a message.”
What do you think these 16-day signals spaced with 4-day patterns and 12-days of silence mean?
