Do you ever wonder what would it be like if aliens finally came to Earth ? What message would you send them if the day comes, when intelligent extraterrestrial beings set foot on our planet?
If we one day succeed in our quest of finding another advanced civilization, what – if anything – should we say to them ?
The 21st century might offer the breakthrough we are all waiting for – first live alien contact. Our species is coming closer and closer to that point, because of the Breakthrough Listen project, launched by Stephen Hawking and sponsored by the Russian billionaire, Yuri Milner.
However, after analyzing the risks and benefits of an alien encounter, the team of researchers have decided upon the idea of communication. They concluded that humanity cannot afford to make the first step in starting a conversation because we might get obliterated – obviously because of a wrong alien interpretation of our species.
Therefore, the Breakthrough Message program will be launched soon. It aims to encourage debate about how and what to communicate with possible intelligent beings beyond Earth.
It basically filters the information aliens might receive from us. So, instead of sending the entire internet into space, and have a very unpleasant surprise, this great initiative will take the form of an international competition to design messages that could be read by an advanced civilization.
The message must be in digital format, and should reveal the bright side of humanity as well as what our beautiful planet Earth has to offer.
The best ideas will be rewarded with prizes in cash, worth a total of $1,000,000.
The competition is available worldwide and open to everyone.
For the moment we have no plan to send these messages. The problem is a way to learn about the possibilities and constraints associated with interstellar correspondence.
To encourage on the ethical and philosophical issues of sending messages into space, we pledge not to transmit any message until there has been a wide-ranging debate at high levels of science and politics on the risks and rewards of contacting advanced civilizations.” – Breakthrough Initiatives
Ordinary individuals now have the opportunity to write history by submitting the best material that could one day cross our galaxy and encounter a more advanced species of aliens, proving that we are not alone after all.
And who knows, maybe one day soon, humanity will be able to use intergalactic communication to engage with alien kin willing to help us and learn from one another.
