Why is Jeff Bezos Building a Giant 10,000-Year Clock in a Mountain Bunker in Texas?

Jeff Bezos is not only the world’s richest man, he also appears to be getting richer. Much richer, to be exact — to the tune of a 76 billion dollar increase since the coronavirus hit, Forbes.com reported recently.

So, what does an eccentric billionaire like Jeff Bezos do with all of that money he’s got lying around?

Aside from evolving Amazon.com and the associated suite of business ventures he’s been busy with, Bezos recently made headlines for arguably the most curious project in recent history, among all wealthy people we’ve seen in the United States — a massive 10,000 year clock.

But unlike most other similar spectacles this one won’t easily be seen. In fact, there’s a good chance that most of the general public will never see it at all.

Is Jeff Bezos Predicting the Worst for Humanity?

Bezos is said to be building the clock inside of a

mountain bunker in Texas, a curious plan considering that it sounds like something the general public would love to gawk at (and perhaps something he could make money from).

Video from CBS News below shows the dizzying descent of workers into the area of the mountain where the clock is being built. They toil away, using large-scale construction equipment, like the inside of a giant watch, working to get every last detail right for the richest man in the world’s project to be dutifully completed.

Construction began in 2018 in West Texas, and the idea for the project is the brainchild of inventor Danny Hillis, who has been discussing the idea for decades and first came up with it in 1989, allegedly.

According to Disclose.TV, it is said that a cataclysm strikes planet Earth about once every 12,000 years, so there’s a strong possibility that Bezos may be creating it as a harbinger of dark times in some distant, dystopian future (hopefully not one that he creates through artificial intelligence and other bizarre and unnecessary projects, but I digress).

With a price tag of around $42 million, Bezos’ clock makes even the most expensive of Rolexes look like child’s play.

The clock is being constructed to only tick one time in a single year, and will also come with a century hand that moves every 100 years, as well as a cuckoo bird that comes out during the end of each millennium.

What the clock lacks in movement and functionality it will make up for in meaningfulness, Bezos and Hillis hope.

The clock is “design to be a symbol, an icon for long-term thinking,” according to Hillis, who spoke about wanting to build a clock that only ticks once going as far back as 1995.

“Visiting the clock will take commitment,” Bezos said. “The nearest airport is several hours away by car, and the foot trail to the Clock is rugged, rising almost 2,000 feet above the valley floor,” he added according to a CBS News video.

The clock will also include five chambers, each representing a specific, and timely, milestone: 1 year, 10 years, 100 years, 1,000 years, and 10,000 years.

A Positive Development for Mankind?

While the mainstream media is understandably and predictably confused about the Bezos clock, the truth is that this particular project is merely a warm-up for some of the exciting new developments we will see in the coming years.

The sheer size, scope, and vision of the project shows that Bezos, like Elon Musk, is willing to put his money where his mouth is when it comes to moving mankind forward.

Could Bezos throw his hat into the space exploration ring in the coming years?

That remains to be seen, but those billions aren’t going to spend themselves, and the project is an intriguing warm-up for bigger and better things to come in my personal opinion.
