Was This Massive Ancient Temple Made of More Than 130 Million Adobe Bricks Made By Ancient Civilizations

Did you know that the largest pre-Columbian adobe structure built in the Americas is composed of 130 MILLION adobe bricks? The Huaca del Sol Temple was completed around 450 CE.

Dated back more than 1,500 years ago, a pre-Columbian civilization that inhabited the northern coast of what is now the territory of Peru erected a humongous structure in honor of the sun. What they worshipped back then.

It was called Huaca del Sol, this massive temple is believed to have been constructed by the Moche civilization.

This ancient culture flourished in this region of the world from around 100 to 750 AD. They were best known for their agriculturally based lifestyle. They invested a lot of time and resources in building a very detailed network of irrigation canals that eventually allowed them to supply water for their crops. Spreading water far and wide to feed their crops and create automated crop growth. Quite a brilliant move at the time.

It was one of the most sophisticated cultures at that point in history in ancient times in Peru. A lot of evidence of their hidden history can be found in numerous unearthed artifacts. We can see that people who participated in numerous activities, including fighting, fishing, hunting, sexual encounters, ceremonies and even sacrifices. Which were normal in their culture of Peru at this time.

But what they are best known for. They are most famous for the goldwork, their ‘huacas‘ and irrigation systems for giving crops water.

At around year 450, the Moche civilization had completed as many as eight different construction phases on the infamous Huaca del Sol.

They started out very small, but then adding more and more material to the structure as it grew bigger and bigger. They laid down layers of new bricks on top of older bricks. To continue to build up and out. It was an additive process requiring a LOT of bricks.

In fact, archeologists don’t see eye to eye on it. They argue that the structure is such an impressive structure and believe that the ancient Moche used more than 130 million adobe bricks in the production of this, eventually completing after an amount of time that is unknown what was long considered the largest pre-Colombian adobe structure ever erected in the entire world.

Its size is evidence how important it was for that culture and society at that time. What it meant to them.

According to archeologists perspective, several different telltale signs in the Huacas suggest that more than one hundred different communities participated in the construction of the Huaca.

There Are Actually Two Huacas

The Huaca del Sol does not stand alone, as it shouldn’t when you build something that big!

Together this is paired with the Huaca de la Luna, the two temples make up the Huacas de Moche, part of the ancient capital city of the Moche called Cerro Blanco.

The smaller of the two temples, the Huaca de la Luna has given archeological experts the most detailed information on the area.

During the seventeenth century, at the height of the Spanish Conquest in the world, the Spanish conquistadors damaged and looted the structure greatly. That’s because they were on the hunt for treasure for the Spanish crown.

In order to facilitate the success of their looting efforts and transporting the gold from the temple, the Spanish redirected water from the Moche river to run past the Huaca del Sol base. Unfortunately this caused quite a bit of damage to the temple.

The archeological experts argue that 66% of the Huaca del Sol have been lost to erosion and looting, unfortunately.

An Ancient Mud-brick Wonder Of The World

The Huaca del Sol was built with four core levels. There is enough evidence that suggests the temple was rebuilt and added to by different rulers throughout history over decades.

The structure is massive, and today sits about 41 meters tall. That’s quite the height, was once a towering and an incredible 50 meters in height. This high temple with a base of 340 meters by 160 meters.

This is located at the very center of the Moche capital, the Huaca del Sol is believed to have been used for several distinctive activity including purposes such as ritual activity, ceremonies, and a royal residence and burial chamber.
