As the new coronavirus or COVID-19 is sweeping through the world, few predictions about this global pandemic have raised some eyebrows. Did books and movies predict this disaster? From seers to authors, here the biggest five coronavirus predictions discussed today.

End of Days: Predictions and Prophecies About the End of the World by Sylvia Browne (2008), book

Sylvia Brown was a American author and psychic whose book “End of Days: Predictions and Prophecies About the End of the World” has recently caught the attention of many including celebrities.

In the most descriptive coronavirus-related passage, Browne wrote:

“In around 2020 a severe pneumonia-like illness will spread throughout the globe, attacking the lungs and the bronchial tubes and resisting all known treatments.”

“Almost more baffling than the illness itself will be the fact that it will suddenly vanish as quickly as it arrived, attack again ten years later, and then disappear completely.”

At this time, the first part of the prediction is spot-on. The novel coronavirus appeared at the end of 2019, and as it spreads in 2020, it mainly attacks the lungs, and there are no known or accepted cures.

The question is will the second part of the prediction come true. Will the virus disappear unexpectedly? And will it come back after 10 years? Time will tell.

The Eyes of Darkness by Dean Koontz (1981), book

“The Eyes of Darkness” is a fictional novel that mentions a virus used as a Chinese bioweapon. In the original edition of the book in 1981, the virus was called Gorki-400, referencing a Russian locality. In the 1989 release of the book, the virus was renamed to Wuhan-400.

The book passages that refers to the virus state:

To understand that you have to go back twenty months. It was around then that a Chinese scientist named Li Chen defected to the United States, carrying a diskette record of China’s most important and dangerous new biological weapon in a decade. They call the stuff ‘Wuhan-400’ because it was developed at their RDNA labs outside the city of Wuhan, and it was the four-hundredth viable strain of man-made microorganisms created at that research center.”

“And Wuhan-400 has other, equally important advantages over most biological agents. For one thing, you can become an infectious carrier only four hours after coming into contact with the virus. That’s an incredibly short gestation period. Once infected, no one lives more than twenty-four hours. Most die in twelve. Wuhan-400’s kill rate is one hundred percent.”

The mention of the city of Wuhan is what strikes readers as an unusual coincidence. Wuhan is where the pandemic of COVID-19 started. And while there is not enough information that the virus is man-made, the theory that the novel coronavirus has escaped the lab has not been fully put to rest.

What also differs from Koontz’s book is that the coronavirus is not nearly as deadly with the current estimated death rate falling between 3-4%.

Les Prophéties by Michel de Nostredame aka Nostradamus (1555), book

One of the most well known seers in history, French astrologer Nostradamus, made many predictions in his lifetime. He made a total of 942 predictions of future events. Dozens of his predictions spoke of different plagues, and one has been recently associated with COVID-19.

“From the vain enterprise honour and undue complaint,

Boats tossed about among the Latins, cold, hunger, waves

Not far from the Tiber the land staine with blood,

And diverse plagues will be upon mankind.”

Nostradamus’s predictions are known to be vague and full of metaphors. Some say he used a “history repeats itself” technique to project past events into the future. Regardless of his methods, those who analyze his words say he has predicted the Great Fire of London of 1666, the French Revolution in 1789, the rise of Adolf Hitler, the assassinations of John F. Kennedy, and September 11.

As far as the coronavirus prediction goes, people say Tiber, an Italian river, may have alluded that Italy was going to struggle with this virus. Italy was the second country to have COVID-19 spread.

Contagion (2011), movie

The movie Contagion was inspired by the 2009 H1N1 “swine flu” pandemic. The scriptwriter Scott Z. Burns said about the viruses that “It’s not a matter of if there will be another pandemic, it’s a matter of when.”

In the movie the virus jumps from bats to pigs to people. COVID-19 is thought by some to have originated from bat soup. Critics say the movie is a good representation of viral pandemics and what they do to humanity.

Ironically it did actually prepare the world to deal with what is currently happening.

The Masque of the Red Death, 1842 book, 1964 movie

The last book (turned into a movie) being discussed is The Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allan Poe. The disease described has little to do with COVID-19 as it causes seizures, sharp pains and bleeding. However, it is the social commentary in the book that draws some parallels. People in the book were instructed to self isolate, and some had their doors welded shut until the plague goes away.

Many countries in the world today are on a self-quarantine order because of coronavirus, and there have been stories in China of people having their door welded shut forcefully.

Have you found any of these five predictions striking? Whether told by psychics or novelists, fiction can sometimes show us the truth.
